Representing Emotion with Emojis and ASL

Writer: Jessica LasaterJessica Lasater

On our final day of the three-day teaching experience, we focused on ways to communicate emotion. Specifically, emojis and ASL. The above photo was the end result of our ASL banner that reads "UTA loves Evergreen." We thought it would be a fun way to give our group a goodbye and thank you card for letting us spend time teaching them, and let them know how much we enjoyed it. We created the drawings of the hands signing and circles for them to design emojis. THen our group of clients painted the banner. So it became a collaborative farewell card. Our second project for this visit was creating emoji mosaics from cardboard circles and construction paper. They really enjoyed the idea of the art-making relating to something they see in media or pop culture. It made me realize how relating projects to pop culture or things that are relevant to students' lives will encourage them to buy into the lesson more readily.
